Dwight off to a busy start at Iowa Games

Former University of Iowa football player Tim Dwight competed in the 2008 Iowa Games triathlon. Dwight, an Iowa City native, has challenged competitors from across the state to beat him in any of the 25 events he’ll compete in.

Former Iowa Hawkeye football star and 10-year NFL veteran Tim Dwight is off to a busy start at the 2011 Iowa Games this year.

By 12:15 p.m.  Saturday, Dwight had run a 4K cross country race, competed in horseshoe throwing, played a 3-on-3 basketball tournament and attempted a table tennis tournament, from which he was quickly dispatched by a few superior opponents.

“The stamina is good right now, and this is kind of a nice break right here,” said Dwight as he left the table tennis tournament. “I had about an hour after 3 on 3 to relax a little bit, but it’s about to pick back up here this afternoon.”

Pick up indeed. Dwight is competing in 25 events at this year’s summer games in honor of the Iowa Games’ 25th anniversary.

“I have some swimming, track and field, archery and shooting later today. It’s quite a list,” Dwight said. “I’m doing something like 14 events today and also a few tomorrow.”

Although his main goals are just to survive the onslaught of events and encourage others to get involved in the Iowa Games, Dwight has also found some competitive success. He finished second in his age group in the 4K cross country race at the ISU cross country course in Ames.

“I mean, there weren’t a whole lot of guys in the 35 to 39 age division,” said the 36-year-old Dwight with a smile. “But I’ll take it.”
