Severe thunderstorm warning for Thursday evening

Update (9:58 p.m. Thursday, June 9):

The National Weather Service has canceled the severe thunderstorm warning for Story County.

The cancellation notice said the storm has “weakened below severe limits and no long poses an immediate threat to life or property.” It also indicated gusty winds and heavy rain could still occur.


 

Update (8:52 p.m. Thursday, June 9):

The National Weather Service has reissued the severe thunderstorm warning for Ames. The warning now lasts until 10 p.m.

The warning said a stom capable of producing winds in excess of 60 MPH was located 12 mines southwest of Ames and moving east at 45 MPH.


Update (8:52 p.m. Thursday, June 9):

A new severe thunderstorm warning has been issued that now included Ames. The warning lasts until 9:30 p.m.

At 8:46 p.m. the storm was located 9 miles south of Ames and moving northeast at 40 MPH. The warning says teh storm is “capable of producing ping pong ball size hail and damaging winds in excess of 60 MPH.”

The warning now includes mile markers 103 to 126 on I-35.


 

The National Weather Service in Ames issued a severe thunderstorm warning for southeastern Boone County, eastern Dallas County, northwestern Jasper County, Polk County, southwestern Story County and northwestern Warren County.

The warning box stops just south of Ames, and remains in effect until 9 p.m.

At 8:11 p.m. Doppler Radar indicated a storm capable of producing ping pong ball size hail located 10 miles west of Des Moines and moving northeast at 35 MPH, according the warning.

The Des Moines Airport was reporting golf ball sized hail at 8:18 p.m.

Interstate Highway 35 between mile markers 62 and 110 are included in the warning. The Highway 30 exit is at mile marker 111.
