Godfrey dismissed from team
May 9, 2011
The ISU men’s basketball team announced on Monday that freshman Calvin Godfrey was dismissed from the team following an arrest Saturday night for possession of marijuana.
The 6-foot-8-inch forward violated multiple team rules throughout the course of his freshman season, according to the statement.
“I believe that helping young men develop as people is part of my responsibility as coach,” said coach Fred Hoiberg in the statement. “That’s why I gave Calvin a chance to return to our team after his mid-year suspension for team rules violations. But, his arrest over the weekend ended his association with our team.”
Godfrey saw action in 29 games during the 2010-11 season, starting five times. He averaged 5.7 points and 5.4 rebounds per game over the course of the season.
He was suspended in February for three games for violating team policy, and Hoiberg said things were looking better for Godfrey after the suspension.
“Calvin responded (to his earlier discipline) by playing his best basketball after the suspension,” Hoiberg said. “He had taken some positive strides this spring so the decision to dismiss is hard. I wish him the best in his future but that future will be with a different basketball program and school.”
Godfrey’s dismissal is just the latest in a series of men’s basketball-related arrests. Fellow freshman forward Jordan Railey was arrested earlier in the year for OWI and disorderly conduct. Most recently, newly-hired assistant coach Cornell Mann was also arrested for OWI while in Ohio.
After Godfrey’s removal from the team, the Cyclones and Hoiberg now have two scholarships available for the 2011-12 season.
Godfrey was not available for comment.
