More homepage updates headed to iowastatedaily.com
May 26, 2011
Summer session may be in full swing but, the Daily is bringing some spring cleaning to its homepage in the coming weeks.
Expect to see a series of changes happen during the next several weeks that will lead to what we hope will be an improved homepage experience.
The first of those changes took place yesterday afternoon. The top of the side rail on the homepage will now be devoted to improved navigation. We’ve added 12 quick link spots. The intention is that these spots will change as we have new promotions, products or services to direct your attention to.
With the addition of these quick links we have removed the police blotter and today’s paper from the homepage. These features take up a lot of space, and we think we can better display them elsewhere on the site. The quick links for these two features will be permanent.
Moving the blotter to a new page allowed us to show 15 days worth of entries and provide a link to additional entries. It also allowed us to add the same disclaimer that appears in print and provide information on how to request an addendum to entries where the charges were dropped or the individual was found not guilty.
Placing today’s print edition on a new page allowed us to double the width of the issue being displayed and provide links to our PDF archives.
Another change implemented today was the addition of nationally syndicated news videos on the homepage. These videos, which are placed in the same place as our local videos used to be, allows us to offer short national news videos. Local videos will eventually be added back into this spot, as well as more prominently displayed in the featured box at the top of the page.
More improvements are planned, and I will post more updates as changes take place. In the meantime, leave us some feedback on what you would like to see changed. Add a comment on this post or send me an email at [email protected]. We want our homepage provide all the information you want in the best way possible.
