In a four day span, Iowa State’s Tripp Kinney — a junior — has continued to solidify his standing as one of the programs most prolific golfers after his performance at the NCAA Championships which ended Monday.

In the final round, Kinney shot an 82 to push his tournament total to push his 72-hole total to 302 strokes. Kinney finished the NCAA Championships tied for 47th.

Kinney finished with a strokes average of 71.1 on the season, which is the best in Iowa State history. This was also the junior’s third appearance at the NCAA Championships — the most by any athlete in the program’s history.

Since 1989, Kinney has the second best NCAA Championships performance behind All-American Nate McCoy who finished tied for 29th in 2012. The year 1989 was the first implementation of Regional system in Division I golf.

Entering the final round, Kinney had shot 75, 71 and 74 for a grand total of 220 strokes (four over) through 54 holes. With his score, Kinney was tied for 23rd overall and didn’t register a double bogey or worse during those first rounds.

On the final round, wind gusts at the Blessings Golf Club in Arkansas reached up to 30 miles per hour which was a contributing factor in Kinney’s stroke increase in the last round compared to the first three.

It wasn’t until the sixth hole in the final round Kinney registered a double-bogey.

After the first three rounds, the field was reduced from 30 to 15 teams and the next nine individual golfers would advance to the next round.

Kinney was playing against the 155 other golfers at the championships since Iowa State failed to qualify as a team at the Big 12 Championships, but Kinney won the tournament as an individual.

Next season, the Cyclones return their entire roster as Kinney will look to improve his total NCAA Championships appearances to four.
