The ISU women’s golf team enters the Big 12 Championships on Friday as the tournament’s No. 1 seed.

The Cyclones rank No. 15 nationally, following the best regular season in school history in which the Cyclones placed first or second in six of their 11 regular season events.

The stage is set for the Cyclones, now it is all about executing.

“I feel like we are the team to beat,” said senior Laurence Herman. “I think we got a pretty good chance. But we haven’t really thought about it too much; who the best teams are, who the team to beat is. We are really focused on just going out playing well.”

The success they’ve had this season does not matter now, the regular season-record, the broken records, mean nothing as the whole season boils down to this one do-or-die tournament.

“We are not getting extra excited for it,” said coach Christie Martens. “We want to enter the Big-12 Championships like we do all our other tournaments. Not over-think or pressure ourselves.”

“There are a lot of really good teams, and you never know what’s going to happen. We know that if we play well we can win it, and obviously winning it is our goal.”

Victoria Stefansen is one of the two seniors on the team. Her leadership and play have been important to the Cyclones success. She is thrilled with the season they have had, but knows now is the time they need to shine.

“For me it’s my last year here,” Stefansen said. “It’s been my best season here for sure. I could not wish for anything more or think of a better way to leave. At the same time we are still not at our goal, which is winning the Big-12, and then moving on to Regionals and then Nationals.”

Her fellow senior on the team, Herman, shared her teammates feelings.

“We’ve had a great season,” Herman said. “But we don’t want to see it end early. Our goal from the start has been to win the Big 12 Championships and then move on to regionals and then hopefully nationals. I’m not thinking about the end of the season yet, there’s still another month of golf here.”

The Big 12 Championships is the home of the best competition for the team all season. All the teams from the conference are competing, all with a chance to win with school pride on the line.

The Championships tee off at 8 a.m. Friday, and wrap up the final-18 on Sunday.
