Former Iowa State player Bridget Carleton was named to the Connecticut Sun’s 12-person regular season roster. Carleton was chosen in the second round of the draft and 21st overall by Connecticut. 

The WNBA draft consists of 12 teams and three total rounds, for 36 overall selections.

Being a second-round pick doesn’t guarantee a roster spot, as evident by the Dallas Wings cutting former Iowa player Megan Gustafson. Gustafson was the 17th overall pick. 

The six-foot-three-inch Gustafson lead the country in her senior year at Iowa with a 27.8 scoring average per game. She is the fourth women’s player in NCAA history to score 1,000 or more points in a season.

Gustafson was also the consensus Naismith Player of the Year while averaging 13.5 rebounds.

In her college career, Carleton was the first Big 12 Player of the Year in the program’s history, and was a two-time All-American.

Carleton averaged 21.7 points, 8.6 rebounds and four assists a game for the Cyclones.

Both players averaged averaged exactly 11 minutes played during the WNBA preseason, which consisted of three games. Carleton averaged 5.3 points and 1.7 steals while Gustafson averaged 2.7 points and three rebounds a game.

Carleton is one of two rookies to make the Sun’s roster — the other being Kristine Anigwe, who was the team’s first-round pick and ninth overall pick.
