Spangler, Mayfield power wrestlers to 33-14 dual win
February 6, 2011
Super Bowl Sunday may have kept many fans in front of the television, but for those who made the trek to Hilton Colesium, they were witness to the last hoorah for the senior Cyclone wrestlers.
On a day that saw four Cyclones honored, Chris Drouin, Nate Carr Jr., Kyle Slifka, and Jon Reader honored, the Cyclones (9-8 , 0-3 Big 12) extended their win streak to three matches with a victory over Arizona State (5-11, 1-3 Pac-10).
“Our guys who have been consistent throughout the year remain to be consistent,” said Cyclone coach Kevin Jackson. “We just have some younger guys that have to come along a little more for us.”
Reader opened Sunday’s action, moving up to 184 pounds and drawing Jake Meredith. Meredith became just another step on Reader’s path to perfection. Reader’s outstanding conditioning and technical acumen from his feet boosted him to a 13-3 major decision.
“I believe in my coach and he said I’m ready, I’m ready,” Reader said. “You have to be a gladiator and be ready to compete whenever.”
No. 17 ranked Jerome Ward followed suit in his bout at 197 pounds. Ward utilized his ability to slow the pace and dictate the match on his way to a 3-1 win.
Kyle Simonson has turned things around at home. Hilton had not been the heavywieght’s friend in recent weeks, but for the second time this weekend, the slender Cyclone picked up a victory. The resident country boy controlled Arizona State’s Levi Cooper, 8-3.
Trailing 10-0, the Sun Devils needed a spark and they found it in the form of No. 2 ranked Anthony Robles. Robles battered Brandon Jones for a technical fall, 17-1.
Kalin Goodsite made it two in a row for the visitors by virtue of 3-2 win at 133 pounds. Cyclone Ben Cash hung with Sun Devil for all three periods, but was unable to complete a takedown in the third round and get the win.
Iowa State continues to be plagued by 141 pounds. A forfeit at the weight put Arizona State on top, 14-10. Max Mayfield brought his high-octane style to the squared circle and recaptured the lead. Mayfield exploded for a technical fall victory over Tai Fukumoto, 18-2.
The changes in the lineup opened up a spot at 165 pounds. Chris Spangler utilized the opportunity. Spangler threw Te Edwards to his back and picked up a fall for the Cyclones.
Six points from Spangler and another six via forfeit at 174 closed out a dynamic Senior Day performance, 33-14 in favor of Iowa State.
“It’s always great going out in front of your home crowd,” Reader said. “The loyal Iowa State fans that always stick with us and it’s a great opportunity to compete and have fun for the last time in Hilton.”
