Editorial: Go, Pack, Go!
February 3, 2011
The late, great Chris Farley did it. So did Pat “Mr. Miyagi” Morita. Erin Andrews and Justin Timberlake still do it, and Lil’ Wayne just released a song about it.
This Sunday, we, the Editorial Board, will have our cheeseheads on.
Yes, Daily Faithful: we back the Pack.
It’s been 13 years since Super Bowl XXXII, where the Packers came in as an 11-point favorite and defending Super Bowl Champions. It was the fourth Super Bowl for John Elway, the fifth for the Broncos, and despite Elway going 11 for 22 with one pick and no touchdowns, both quarterback and franchise won their first Super Bowl.
By the by, “Big Ben” Roethlisberger sports the no. 7 in “honor” of Elway. His words, not ours.
We know there are quite a few Chicago natives and Bears fans on campus rooting against the Pack. It must be tough carrying around a backpack with a chip on your shoulder — almost as tough as missing the Super Bowl.
Oh, snap.
Perhaps the greatest thing to come from Sunday’s matchup is Lil Wayne’s ‘Green and Yellow’ track making its way across the Internet and into hearts and minds everywhere.
We’ll concede that Wiz Khalifa’s “Black and Yellow” is an awesome tribute to Pittsburgh and its sports teams, even if we’ve heard it a few too many times at our favorite watering hole.
But, you know what, folks? Wiz ain’t no Weezy. Not even close.
“Sippin cliquot and rockin yellow diamonds/
So many rocks up in my watch I can’t tell what the time is,”
… while neat, pales in comparison to the brilliance of:
“We knocked the Eagles and the Falcons and the Bears off/
Now we ’bout to cut Troy Polamalu hair off.”
The best part of Sunday’s match-up is that the award bestowed upon the Super Bowl winner is called the Vince Lombardi Trophy — yes, that Vince Lombardi, the storied Packers coach.
The Pittsburgh Steelers have six Lombardi Trophies. Green Bay has three.
But don’t let the numbers fool you. Roethlisberger and his Steelers are about to enter Mr. Rodgers’ Neighborhood. That’s Aaron Rodgers, the quarterback who left Packer Backers saying, “Brett who?”
And when they get there, they’ll discover what it means to be ‘feelin’ so fly like a Cheesehead.”
So, in this Editorial Board’s long-standing tradition of making endorsements for everything from presidential candidates to what kind of dog the Obama family should get — we, the Iowa State Daily Editorial Board, endorse the Green Bay Packers.
May they Lambeau Leap their way into another trophy in their great former coach’s namesake.
In McCarthy we trust.
