Gridiron Picks: Bowl Games
January 1, 2011
Our final installment of picks for the football season, as sports writers Jake Lovett, Chris Cuellar, Jeremiah Davis and David Merrill select their winners for the bowl games after New Year’s Day.
All picks are merely opinions and in no way can be defended by fact or common sense.
Records heading into the final seven games:
Jake Lovett: 61-44
Chris Cuellar: 59-46
Jeremiah Davis: 57-48
David Merrill: 52-53
Gator Bowl: Mississippi State vs. Michigan
Jake – Michigan
Chris – Mississippi State – I still believe in Denard like I just felt the nail holes in his hands, but there’s a reason Mississippi State played its way out of the SEC and into the postseason.
Jeremiah – Mississippi State – The Cyclones of the SEC will turn the heat up on RichRod’s seat. Big Blue won’t stand mediocrity much longer.
David – Michigan – This is an interesting matchup, but the Wolverines won’t let Rich Rod get any closer to the “I’m gonna lose my job edge.”
Rose Bowl: Wisconsin vs. TCU
Jake – TCU – These Frogs are horny for a BCS win.
Chris – Wisconsin – Gary Patterson will be hoping for a job offer from Texas when Bret Bielema goes for two with Wisconsin up 30 in the fourth quarter.
Jeremiah – Wisconsin – This could end up being the best bowl game of them all. Wisconsin will win a close one.
David – TCU – Say what you want about their schedule, but TCU is a really good football team. Wisconsin won’t know what hit them.
Fiesta Bowl: Oklahoma vs. Connecticut
Jake – Oklahoma – The Huskies’ prize for winning the Big East?
Chris – Oklahoma – Seriously? Let’s hope Ryan Broyles doesn’t hand out sedatives before kickoff. Oh, who am I kidding, he catches more touchdowns every season than DJK did in four years.
Jeremiah – Oklahoma – This could end up being the worst bowl game of them all. Who outside the state of Connecticut thinks they have a shot?
David – Oklahoma – The Sooners are going to prove why the NCAA should consider not giving the BCS an automatic bid.
Orange Bowl: Stanford vs. Virginia Tech
Jake – Stanford – If a tree falls on the beach, does it make a noise? I guess we’ll never know.
Chris – Virginia Tech – Tyrod Taylor is like a young Michael Vick. And everyone knows the gateway into dog fighting is burning down stupid looking mascot trees.
Jeremiah – Stanford – The Hokies are a long way from the James Madison game, but the Cardinal have the #1 NFL Draft pick under center.
David – Stanford – I think the way that V-Tech is playing right now could give them a shot against the Cardinal, in the end though, Andrew Luck is just too much.
Sugar Bowl: Ohio State vs. Arkansas
Jake – Ohio State – Nothing says “big game QBs” like Terrell Pryor and Ryan Mallett.
Chris – Arkansas – Sweater vests, quarterbacks that choke, losing to SEC teams — THE Ohio State tradition.
Jeremiah – Arkansas – The Razorbacks stumbled a bit earlier in the season, but are as dangerous as any team in the country right now.
David – Ohio State – As much as I would hate to hear Kirk Herbstreit bask in his glory of victory, Ohio State seems to be over that whole choking thing.
Cotton Bowl: LSU vs. Texas A&M
Jake – LSU – Remember when everyone wanted Les Miles fired? Yeah. Well, he’s 10-2.
Chris – Texas A&M – I’m not sure which coach will attempt to lose the game harder, but I know Ryan Tannehill wins football games.
Jeremiah – LSU – Every time you think Les Miles is outmatched, he has his team ready and they get the win. I think this is one of those matchups.
David – LSU– Les Miles has this magic about him that just allows him to pull out close games despite his severe lack of clock management skills.
BCS National Championship: Auburn vs. Oregon
Jake – Auburn – The Tigers’ title payout should more than cover Cam’s expenses for next season.
Chris – Auburn – When in doubt, take the NFL-ready players. Does anyone see Darren Thomas taking snaps at the next level? Cam is already there.
Jeremiah – Auburn – The Chiz gets a national title two years removed from 2-10 in Ames. It may sting for Cyclone fans, but everyone did get a happy ending.
David – Oregon – Oregon isn’t going to stop Cam Newton. They don’t have to. All they have to do is out score him. That they will do. I’ll even throw in a score 48-42 Ducks.
