Letter: Look beyond Iowa State for opportunities to get involved
January 20, 2011
While the university was closed Jan. 17 there were many opportunities throughout the Ames community to celebrate the life of Martin Luther King, Jr.
A group of community members including representatives from Iowa State, the city of Ames, Ames School District and various non-profits planned three events to celebrate the life and work of Dr. King. These events were open to all community members to participate. Although the evening celebration was canceled due to weather, our two other events were a success.
MLK Day is a National Day of Service and thousands of people participate in service projects to strengthen local communities. More than 70 volunteers at the Ames Public Library made 77 fleece tie blankets that were donated to children in need through Project Linus. Fraternity members from Alpha Tau Omega participated in this event. Thirty volunteers also completed projects at the ACCESS shelter on MLK Day, including ISU students from the 10,000 Hours Show, Acacia fraternity and Zeta Phi Beta Sorority.
In the afternoon, we hosted a film and discussion on civic engagement and race issues in our community. More than 50 individuals participated, including ISU students and the Thomas Hill, vice president of student affairs.
In your editorial, you ask for administration to “broaden our horizons.” Well, we ask for you to broaden your horizons and look past the boundaries of Iowa State and get involved with the Ames community.
Community events occur every day, sometimes with ISU involvement and sometimes without. Regardless who plans an event, if it takes place in Ames, all are welcome. King fought for justice and inclusion. To create a just and inclusive community, all members of Ames must view community celebrations and events as opportunities to come together to fulfill his dream.
