From college life to real life

Stephanie Sink —

Graduating from college can mean giving up a lot of things and replacing them with new ones. Getting a real job, moving to a new city or moving back in with your parents can entail trading out your old routine for a new one. Heather Daksal, a summer 2008 ISU graduate,

shared some of the old college-life habits she traded out for new ones:

■  Then: I would fly out to Denver to see my boyfriend.

Now: I fly back to Iowa to see my friends.

■  Then: I would roll out of bed at 9 a.m. to attend classes.

Now: I have to get up at 7 a.m. to go to work.

■  Then: During the week, I would do the occasional homework when I had to.

Now: I do nothing until it’s time to go to bed because I have to get up

earlier for work.

■  Then: I used to walk a mile to class or take the CyRide.

Now: I drive seven miles through the city of Denver.

■  Then: When going out on the weekends, I used to be able to afford a few glasses of Boulevard.

Now: I have to cut back and buy Coor’s Light.

■  Then: I used to spend most of my money on food and going out on

weekends or the occasional weeknight.

Now: I have to spend the majority of my money on student loans and

other bills.

■  Then: Some of my favorite restaurants in Ames that I frequented were Jimmy Johns and La Fuente.

Now: My favorite restaurant is Spicy Thai.

■  Then: I used to wait a few extra weeks after movies came out to go

see them at the dollar theater.

Now: I barely go to movies because I don’t have time.

■  Then: I used to check my Facebook a lot during class.

Now: I only check it at home in my spare time.

■  Then: I used to dread going to class.

Now: I wish I could go back to classes.
