Is a Sony brand PlayStation phone in the future?

Giant conglomerates, they run the world; take

Sony Corporation for example. It’s comprised of Sony Electronics,

Sony Pictures Entertainment, Sony Computer Entertainment, Sony

Music Entertainment, Sony Ericsson and Sony Financial. Combined

these companies bring in $7.4 trillion annually in revenue, and $40

billion a year in net income. These are companies themselves with

their own agendas and strategies, with separate budgets and

different sales forecasts.

One issue Sony has had in the past is getting

all of their business units to work together on certain products.

How cool would it be if their Computer Entertainment Division,

PlayStation, teamed up with their electronics division and Sony

Ericsson, cell phones, to make some like super crazy phone that had

an awesome CyberShot camera and played PlayStation games? If you

think that’s as cool as I do, then let me tell you the story of a

“tech unicorn,” an awesome product that never seems to get released

and how it’s slowly becoming a reality.

This changes everything. Although still

unconfirmed by Sony, several leaks during the last few months have

brought this fantasy phone to light. Just the concept

of such a phone is a huge game changer. This new phone will be

running the Google Android operating system which has more than

100,000 apps, and this PlayStation phone will feature its own

specialty app store for all of its games; those of which have yet

to be named but expect a lot of classic titles and some new games

made just for this phone. The phone itself looks a lot like the PSP

Go but with a touchpad in the middle which has yet to be

explained.

As if the Farmvilles and the Mafia Wars of the

world haven’t brought all productivity to a complete halt, the idea

of full-fledged 3-D games on your phone could make things all that

much worse. This is clearly an effort by Sony to take a shot at

Apple’s line of so called gaming devices, as seen in the iPad,

iPhone and iPod Touch.

This phone clearly took some effort by Sony’s

upper management to get all of these product divisions to work

together in a fashion that could be beneficial to all parties.

About time if you ask me. How long did Sony

honestly plan on making nothing but feature phones? In this growing

mobile phone market, diversification is key, and by making mediocre

phones you’re not going to get very far. Pulling in the big guns

with the PlayStation branding could be Sony’s chance to take the

market by storm.

But let’s get real for a second. Will Sony

actually release this phone? Is this phone real? Will they actually

sell decent games for it? Will those games not cost the user an arm

and a leg to play?

Sony has a long history of making amazing

products and then charging consumers twice what they are worth

This new phone could be a new era in the Sony

brand. A decent handset that utilizes Sony’s back catalog of games,

movies and music and uses online content distribution to get those

to customers at a fair price.
