Greek Stroll Competition showcases sorority, fraternity pride

Greek Fest “Express Yourself Showcase” Stroll Competition on Sunday will celebrate the National Pan-Hellenic and Multicultural Greek Councils.
Strolling is a synchronized routine done in a single-file line. All dance moves must start and end in a line.
Each group will perform a 5 to 8 minute routine that usually consists of multiple songs. The routines will be judged on creativity, precision and overall performance.
“Strolling allows me to express myself and my moves because you can’t really see the audience but the light is on you,” said Kennesha Woods, senior in child, adult and family services.
Greek Fest used to be a step competition which places more emphasis on steps such as stomping, clogging or tapping. Last year they changed it to the current Stroll Competition.
Four sororities will compete for the $300 cash prize and trophy.
Zeta Phi Beta and Delta Sigma Theta have groups with students and alumni from Iowa State competing. ISU’s Sigma Gamma Rho combined with the University of Northern Iowa. The Multicultural greek sorority, Sigma Lambda Gamma from the University of Iowa, will perform in Sunday’s competition.
“Some teams have been practicing every night,” said Cameron Beatty, graduate adviser for the NPHC and Multicultural Greek Council.
Woods said they watch YouTube videos, past strolling performances and dance videos to get ideas for their stroll.
“Sometimes we just listen to the music and figure out what goes to the beat,” Woods said.
This year marks the 80th anniversary of the NPHC. It’s composed of nine international Greek-letter sororities and fraternities. Iowa State currently has four active chapters in NPHC.
“Greek Fest brings people together from Iowa State and the outside community to celebrate with us,” Woods said.
Alpha Phi Alpha, Omega Psi Phi and Phi Beta Sigma fraternity members from Iowa State and the University of Iowa will perform together for the finale.
