Cyclones lose 4-3 to Oklahoma in high-scoring bout
October 1, 2010
The ISU soccer team had to play catch-up nearly the entire game Friday night against Oklahoma and wasn’t able to overcome an early goal.
Sooner freshman midfielder Samantha Howell got a pass from freshman defender Carrie Whigham and kicked the ball past ISU freshman keeper Maddie Jobe for the early 1-0 lead.
A few minutes later, ISU freshman Emily Goldstein put together a pair of breakaways, but OU sophomore keeper Kelsey Devonshire made saves on both.
Not too long after, Sooner sophomore forward Caitlin Mooney kicked the ball to Jobe’s left for the goal in the 20th minute. It was assisted by freshman forward Amy Petrikin.
Iowa State (6-4-2, 1-1 Big 12) put together some offensive opportunities after freshman forward Jennifer Dominguez sent a cross pass to fellow freshman forward Brittany Morgan in front of the goal, but Morgan shot high in the 26th minute.
In the 33rd minute, Morgan took a free kick and the ball bounced off the crossbar, and after a few deflections, resulted in a corner kick for Iowa State.
Morgan took the corner and the ball ended up making its way back to her and she took another shot, this time sneaking it over Devonshire’s fingertips for Iowa State’s first goal of the game. The goal marked her third of the season.
Only a minute later, Oklahoma (6-4-1, 2-2) took the wind out of Iowa State’s sails. Sooner freshman midfielder Emily Reid took a shot off the crossbar and junior forward Kelsey Kraft scored off the bounce-back, giving Oklahoma a 3-1 halftime lead.
The Cyclones came out of halftime firing, kicking off the half with a Morgan free kick, a shot from sophomore midfielder Kelsey Calvert that missed wide left, a Dominguez shot that went wide right, and then a goal from Dominguez — all in the first 10 minutes.
Senior midfielder and co-captain Jordan Bishop gave Dominguez a pass on the far side of the field and Dominguez’s shot was deflected by Devonshire but stayed alive and trickled into the goal for her first of the season.
Oklahoma weakened the Cyclones’ morale yet again less than a minute after Dominguez’s goal.
Jobe stepped up on a play at the top of the box and OU senior forward Whitney Palmer took advantage and walked the ball in untouched for the goal.
Morgan put the Cyclones back in contention in the 54th minute, when she went on a breakaway and put the ball out of Devonshire’s reach to make it 4-3.
The Cyclones had a few corner kicks and shots toward the end of the game, but weren’t able to tie the game, giving them their first conference loss on the season.
