Iowa State topped in-state rival Northern Iowa 27-0 at Jack Trice Stadium on Saturday night.

The Cyclones (2-2, 0-1 Big 12) had two interceptions returned for touchdowns — 94-yard return by Jeremy Reeves and a 25-yard return by A.J. Klein — blocked a field goal, forced five turnovers and held Northern Iowa (1-2) to just 320 total yards of offense in the win.

Sophomore quarterback Jerome Tiller manned the ISU offense after starter Austen Arnaud was pulled following the game’s first series, an Iowa State three-and-out. ISU coach Paul Rhoads said the quarterback was forced out of the game due to an injury to his left shoulder, the same shoulder he injured last weekend against Kansas State.

Tiller went 11-for-22 passing for 87 yards. The ISU offense only managed 210 total yards.

Iowa State started the scoring with a 37-yard field goal by Grant Mahoney in the first quarter. Mahoney would later add a 46-yard kick and would run for a first down on a fake, a play that eventually led to an 6-yard touchdown run by Alexander Robinson.

“The fake field goal was a big momentum booster for us,” Rhoads said. “Even more than that, Sedrick Johnson’s catch on third down at the end of that was huge for our football team to give us a touchdown and a little bit of momentum.”

Robinson’s touchdown gave Iowa State a 13-0 lead at halftime.

Robinson had 74 yards on 15 carries, but surrendered many of his carries to freshmen Jeff Woody and Shontrelle Johnson in the second half. Woody had five carries for 20 yards while Johnson had three carries for 18 yards.

In the second half, all of the scoring was done by the ISU defense.

Early in the third quarter, UNI quarterback Zach Davis was pressured and under threw his receiver and was intercepted by Reeves, who then took the ball back 94-yard for a touchdown.

After an ISU punt, the ISU defense again took the field and again got six points from a UNI turnover.

UNI starting quarterback Tirrell Rennie was intercepted by Klein — who two plays later had left the field with an apparent injury — and Klein took the ball in for the touchdown to make the game 27-0 in favor of the Cyclones.

“The two defensive scores in the second half were obviously very, very key to our success here tonight,” Rhoads said.

Klein finished the game with five tackles, his first game not in double digits in 2010. Jake Knott led the Cyclones with 11.

Iowa State had eight penalties for 60 yards in the game, while Northern Iowa had seven penalties for 60 yards.
