Cyclones out-burritoed by Hawks

Iowa State suffered its first loss to the Hawkeyes this year in the $1 burrito promotion hosted by Panchero’s Mexican Grill on Tuesday.

The University of Iowa’s win was determined by the sale of 1,344 burritos, compared to the 1,008 burritos sold at the chain’s Ames location.

The promotion pitted the two schools against each other in the field of burrito-eating for the first time in the history of the interstate rivalry.

Both locations were prepared for a substantial turnout, said Reid Travis, Pancheros’ social media manager.

“We had five or six of our managers from around the different locations and the rest of our Ames crew, so a dozen people or so [were working],” Travis said. “A lot of prep work [went into preparing for the event], the managers came in probably at about seven in the morning and really just started putting together all of the meat, everything we have to do. You know the rice and beans we fly through so quick, and so they just come in and really do a lot of the upscale prep work and get everything spotless, but otherwise it’s just a typical day of prep, it’s just everything’s multiplied by about three.”

The loss didn’t come as a surprise for most Cyclones, because of the difference in location between cities.

“I think that we lost because of the location probably, because [in Ames] it’s kind of far from campus and in Iowa City it’s right downtown,”said Natalie Luksan, sophomore in art and design. “I think to make it more fair for ISU students, they should have it at a stand on campus.”

Despite the school’s loss, students still endured the 45-minute wait to enjoy the cheap food the event provided. Jeremy Krueger, sophomore in industrial engineering, and Alex Hansche, sophomore in civil engineering, both call Iowa City their hometown, but made the trip to Panchero’s and took the time to get their favorite combination of toppings rolled in a fresh-pressed tortilla.

“We came at 2:15 and had to wait for about 40 or 45 minutes,” Krueger said. “I got a burrito with as much as possible, so rice, black beans, chicken, cheese, corn salsa, pico de gallo and sour cream.”

The loss has no implication on the outcome of any other competitions between the two schools, but still left ISU students feeling a little disheartened.

“I’m disappointed because it’d be nice to beat Iowa in something,” Luksan said.
