United Ames Board of Directors Applauds YPA
July 28, 2010
To the Editor,
We applaud the community spirit of the Young Professionals Association in applying and securing a grant to provide free swimming at the Furman Aquatic Center. It was a hugely successful event. So many families and individuals who otherwise, because of economics, might not have been able to enjoy this wonderful new facility, had a super time.
We know it required extra effort on the Parks and Recreation staff to cope with such large numbers of people. Neither the YPA or Parks and Recreation could have anticipated how many people would come. As this was the first time free entrance was offered, it was a learning experience. If another such opportunity happens, we are certain our professional and dedicated staff will build on their first experience.
Seeing people of all ages and backgrounds enjoying being in the water on that hot day was a powerful example of the way in which our community is energized by the growing diversity we have. Hopefully, there will be many other such opportunities that bring us together. Again, thank you to the YPA and the Parks and Recreation staff.
Sincerely,
