Primaries: Terry Branstad
June 2, 2010
Budget cuts: Endorsed by Iowans for Tax Relief, Branstad cut taxes by $124 million in his last term as governor, which is the largest income tax cut in Iowa’s history. He said taxpayers are the “heart and soul” of Iowa, and will continue to defend them. Branstad plans to implement a five-year financial plan for the state government that will limit spending.
Health care: “I believe the Iowa attorney general should join other states in challenging some of the mandates involved in health care reform,” Branstad said. “I have big concerns about the impact it will have on the state’s budget because of the Medicaid implications and cost to states in future years.”
Jobs and economic development: Branstad believes in rural values and will support Iowa farmers. As a veteran, he said he will also “focus on finding jobs for our returning soldiers.”
Branstad plans to create 200,000 new jobs, and work to support young people in order to keep them working in Iowa.
Civil rights: While Branstad said he believes in one man, one woman marriage, he said he will give Iowans the opportunity to vote on the issue.
Immigration: “I believe we must strongly enforce our immigration laws,” Branstad said, “and that state and local officials should work with the federal government to ensure our laws are followed.”
Education: Branstad grew enrollment and expanded the campus while he was president of Des Moines University.
“I plan to restore Iowa’s place as the place to educate our children,” he said. He said he believes in putting the needs of students first.
