Primaries: Michael Mauro

Paige Godden

History: Mauro is secretary of state for Iowa. He has held the office since 2006, and previous to that served as county supervisor for 10 years.

Voter Registration: Mauro said he would like to make voter registration easier. He said that by partnering with the National Secretary of State Agency and the Department of Transportation it is possible to make create a network to make everything more accessible.

Mauro said he would continue to work with the disabled community.

“We need to make sure everyone can participate in the same way,” Mauro said.

On the business service side of the job, he plans to continue to provide information to anyone who does business in Iowa, and make it as easy as possible.

Jobs: Mauro said it is not the secretary of state’s job to bring in or promote any new jobs, just make it easier for the people who are already in Iowa.

Mauro said some of his opponents are boasting they are going to bring jobs into Iowa, but that is nowhere in the capacity of the job.

“They can stand on the steps of the Capitol and yell about it. It sounds good, but if you want to bring jobs in, run for governor,” Mauro said.

Mauro said he is, “by far the best candidate for the job.”

Mauro said his relationship with the county supervisors helps immensely and he is “heads and shoulders above the competition … they’re discussing increases in jobs and economic development, I’m not sure if they’re really running for secretary of state.”
