Freedom March

9 a.m., Ames City Hall, 515 Clark Ave.

Freedom March, begins at City Hall and ends at steps of Beardshear Hall. Readings: First Amendment and Frederick Douglass on Human Liberty [1857].

“Celebrating Freedom: Developing First Amendment Activities at Your School”

10:10 – 11:10 a.m., 101 College of Design

High School Seminar with Randy Swikle, director of the Illinois Journalism Education Association and former high school adviser.

Panel: “Your Freedoms, Your Choices.”

11:10 – 11:30 a.m., 101 College of Design.

Student panelists: Jessie Opoien, Bethany Pint and Tyler Kingkade. Moderator: Kalpana Ramgopal, Greenlee School Student Services.

Feast on the First Amendment

11 a.m. – 2 p.m., in front of Parks Library

Food, exhibits, music, drama, chalk the campus and soap box debates. The high school Champions of Freedom Essay contest prizes will be given during the Feast on the First Amendment.

Panel: “Whom Do You Trust to Tell You the News?: A Discussion about Fair, Accurate, Balanced and Thorough Reporting in the 21st Century.”

4 – 5 p.m., The Gallery, Memorial Union.

Panelists: Rafat Ali, publisher-editor of Paid Content; Marcus McIntosh, morning and weekend anchor for KCCI-TV 8; Marilyn Greenwald, professor of journalism, Ohio University; and Alexandra Hayne, editor of the Ames Tribune.  Moderator: Barbara Mack, professor of journalism.

Keynote: “Watchdog Journalism in the 21st Century”

7 – 8:30 p.m., Great Hall, Memorial Union

Joe Mahr, Chicago Tribune investigative reporter and Pulitzer Prize winner.
