LETTERS: Inform readers about real news
April 19, 2010
I don’t understand why a dumpster catching fire was on the front page of Tuesday’s paper. Why would such a story be given almost 50 percent of the front page — including two big photographs — when there are many other events at Iowa State that don’t receive any attention at all?
Was the story about the dumpster relevant for the ISU community? Not at all.
I could admit the story was relevant if it had something to do with criminal activities and personal safety, but the fire didn’t hurt anyone or damage anything. Even worse, there is no indication of how or why the fire was started, so I wouldn’t conclude it was a “crime,” as stated on the paper.
I think the Daily and its staff should avoid sensationalist and irrelevant articles, like the dumpster on fire, and should inform the readers about campus events and activities. Just to mention a few of the events, the Undergraduate Research Symposium, several senior music recitals, the University Honors Program Poster presentation, Veishea displays, the Concert and Symphonic Band concert or the Masterworks concert.
