March 10, 2010
Iowa State continued its magical run through the ACHA National Tournament last night as they upset No. 3 see Ohio 4-2.
The win advanced the Cyclones to the ACHA National championship, where they will face No. 1 seed Lindenwood tonight at 7 p.m. at the Edge Ice Arena on the campus of Robert Morris University.
The Cyclones have survived two close games along the way, winning two overtime games in a row to start the tournament. They opened with a 7-6 win against Kent State with sophomore forward Cody Steele lighting the lamp in over time to help the Cyclones advance. Iowa State then battled with Illinois, winning 3-2 in overtime on a goal by freshman forward Derek Kohles.
Iowa State was able to end it in regulation last night as they scored on an empty net goal with one second left to secure a third period comeback victory that finished 4-2.
The win also got the Cyclones the revenge they were looking for as the Bobcats had previously eliminated Iowa State from the Central States Collegiate Hockey league tournament at the Cyclone’s home ice.
The Cyclones will face Lindenwood tonight for the ACHA National championship. Lindenwood has coasted into the finals with 8-3, 7-2, and 4-0 victories.
Iowa State’s last trip to an ACHA national championship game was in 1992.
