LETTERS: Choose logic, choose Roling/Dobbels
February 25, 2010
I would like to take this opportunity to state my support for Luke Roling and Nate Dobbels in the upcoming GSB election. I currently serve in the GSB Senate with all four of the candidates (Ms. Peterson, in her current capacity as Vice-President, chairs the body) and have had the privilege of witnessing the full GSB careers of each. Both Mr. Roling and Mr. Dobbels have impressed me with the rationality and levelheadedness with which they have approached the decisions they have made and would perform quite capably in the roles of GSB President and Vice-President. Furthermore, they have a strong grasp of both the powers and limitations of the GSB Executive branch and have refrained from making unreasonable promises this campaign season on which they will be unable to deliver.
I have been less impressed with the performances of Ms. Peterson and Mr. Wilson. In particular, I looked on with dismay as Mr. Wilson, with the support of Ms. Peterson, led a near fanatical push to obtain $30,000 in furniture for the Sloss House. I have been inside the Sloss House, a feat I would imagine few ISU students can boast, and found it filled with furniture that was in perfectly acceptable shape. While it is slightly worn, the furniture in the Sloss House is in far better condition than some of the furniture one would find in the MU or residence hall dens. Money this year for GSB’s funding of student organizations is the tightest it has been in recent memory, and it concerns me that Miss Peterson and Mr. Wilson seem to have no qualms about the wasteful spending of student fee money on unnecessary pet projects.
There is a choice in this year’s GSB election. The choice between reason and emotion; between logic and impulse; between fiscal responsibility and wasteful spending. I urge a vote for the former. I urge a vote for Roling/Dobbels.
