MBB: Cyclones head to Colorado

Michael Zogg —

Clank.

That sound brought the Cyclones victory on Jan. 30 against Colorado as forward Marcus Relphorde missed a last second shot that would have given the Buffaloes a one-point win over Iowa State in Hilton Coliseum.

The Cyclones will travel to Boulder, Colo., for the rematch at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday.

The last time these two teams played, Iowa State overcame a poor 1-for-12 3-point shooting night, thanks in large part to their rebounding. The Buffaloes’ undersized front line got manhandled on the glass by a 52-26 margin in Ames. Rebounding has been a problem for Colorado all season. They are ranked 325th out of 334 nationally in rebounding, with a -6.7 margin.

Along with their rebounding troubles, the Colorado front line also had a lot of problems with ISU forward Craig Brackins, who scored 27 points and 13 rebounds against the Buffaloes. Brackins has been struggling in scoring recently. He seemed to turn that around in the second half against Nebraska on Wednesday, scoring 21 points on a 7-for-10 shooting night.

For Colorado, Cory Higgins and freshman phenomenon Alec Burks lead the way on offense, scoring 17.9 and 16.8 points, accounting for 47 percent of the scoring for Colorado.

In the first meeting between Colorado and Iowa State, Burks got hurt and left the game after just two minutes. Having him back will certainly help the Buffaloes’ scoring in the rematch. Although both teams are at the bottom of the Big 12 standings, at 3-10 in the conference, this game will give the winner an inside track for seeding with just two games before the Big 12 Tournament.
