HOCKEY: Iowa State shuts out Northern Iowa 8-0

Blake Schultz —

Forward Brian Spring, Pete Majkozak, Brad Krueger, Derek Behrman, and defenseman Brent Cornelius stepped on to their home ice for the final time as they tried to follow up a dominating performance against the Panthers of Northern Iowa in game one of the weekend series.

The Panthers have only had a running hockey program for two seasons and are still trying to get their legs up underneath them, so the Cyclones toned down the level of intensity.

This led to neither team recording any penalty minutes.

Iowa State got their eight goals from eight different players.

“They’re a couple levels down as far as competition goes,” senior defenseman Brent Cornelius said. “So it was nice to get everybody contributing and working hard out there.”

The Cyclones finished the season on a strong note as they cruised to a 8-0 victory.

Junior forward Jordan Pascale got the party started with a point blank shot in the slot, beating goalkeeper Drew Hage top shelf stick side, putting the Cyclones up 1-0 with 12 minutes left in the first period.

Junior forward Chris Mackay added to Iowa State’s lead with 25 seconds remaining in the first period and sophomore forward Cody Steele scored less than 10 seconds later to put the Cyclones’ lead at 3-0 after the first period.

Iowa State didn’t wait long to keep up the pressure in the second period as sophomore forward Brian Rooney fed the puck to senior forward Derek Behrman who slid the puck across the line from a short distance, putting the Cyclones up 4-0 at the 18-minute mark in the second period.

Junior Defenseman Pat Condon and sophomore defenseman Josh Mandich added goals in the second period to make the lead 6-0 going into the third. Rooney also recorded his second assist of the game on the Mandich goal.

Junior Forward Josh Rahme and Freshman forward David Kurbatsky scored the third period goals to round out the 8-0 Iowa State victory.

Rahme and Mandich were able to find their rare opportunities in the scorers column as they had seen limited ice time this season due to injuries.

“Those are perfect examples of guys who are making their way to the top,” coach Al Murdoch said. “They do an excellent job of coming to the rink everyday and putting forth their best effort game in and game out. It was great to see them do well out there tonight.”

Although the contest wasn’t quite the intensity level they will see next week against Kent State in the opening round of the ACHA national tournament, it didn’t make it any less hard for the seven seniors to walk off their home ice for the last time.

“It was tough,” senior forward Brad Krueger said. “You put a lot of work in on this ice and it seems like time just flies by and before you know it your done. I’ve really appreciated the fan support we’ve gotten through the entire season and the entire time i’ve been part of the program.”
