GYMNASTICS: Iowa State slides past Minnesota

Kelsey Jacobs —

Iowa State had some ups and downs on Friday night, but it managed to beat the Minnesota Gophers 195.475-195.200.

The Cyclones started out on vault with a 48.700, a big improvement from last week. Minnesota had the lead after the first rotation with a 49.025 on uneven bars.

On the second rotation on uneven bars, the Cyclones scored a 49.150 – a season high that helped them take the lead from Minnesota, who scored a 48.650 on vault.

Iowa State was forced to count a fall on beam after both senior Ceilia Maccani and senior Megan Barnes fell during the third rotation.

The Cyclones scored a 48.400 on the beam, but they lucked out as Minnesota only registered a 48.425 on the floor exercise. The floor is usually the easiest rotation to score big, however Minnesota had one fall and one gymnast tumble out of bounds, which lowered their score.

The Cyclones finished strong on floor with a 49.225, with career highs from three gymnasts. That included a 9.925 from sophomore Michelle Browning, which is the 13th highest score on floor in Cyclone history. The Gophers responded with a strong 49.100 on beam, but it wasn’t enough to top the Cyclones who went home with a win.
