Coming off of five wins in a row, the Iowa State Cyclones lost two games against 14th-ranked Oklahoma State by mercy rule in game one 12-3 in five innings and by a score of 6-3 in game two.

Redshirt sophomore Talyn Lewis and junior Logan Schaben got the Cyclones offense going in game one in the bottom of the second inning as Lewis hit a single to center field and Schaben hit an RBI triple to left field to give the Cyclones a 1-0 lead early.

Oklahoma State tied the game with an RBI single by Samantha Show in the top of the third inning.

Michaela Richbourg’s solo home run in the top of the fourth inning gave Oklahoma State a 2-1 lead.

Oklahoma State took control of the game in the top of the fifth inning as they scored 10 runs, four of which came off of a Richbourg grand slam.

“[In that inning] we didn’t do anything to win ball games, that’s plain and simple,” said Iowa State head coach Jamie Pinkerton. “We didn’t do the things to beat a team, let alone the 14th-ranked team in the country and that’s on me.”

Senior catcher Kaylee Bosworth hit a two-run home run for the Cyclones in the bottom of the fifth to cut the Cyclones deficit to nine and the Cowgirls beat the Cyclones by mercy rule 12-3 in five innings.

The Cowgirls took an early 3-0 lead off of a two-run home run by Madi Sue Montgomery and a solo home run by Richbourg two-run home run in the top of the first inning.

In the top of the second inning, Oklahoma State added to its lead by scoring a run off of a walk to increase the lead to 4-0.

After allowing four earned runs in the first two innings, senior pitcher Savannah Sanders settled in more and only allowed two more runs the rest of the game.

“I thought after the first inning it was a closer ball game, we were starting to get back in it and chip away,” Sanders said.

Iowa State scored its first run of the game in the bottom of the fifth off of an RBI double by Bosworth to bring the Cyclones to within three.

Oklahoma State added two runs in the top of the sixth inning to give them a 6-1 lead.

Mikayla Ramos hit an RBI single that cut the Cyclones deficit to four, and Talyn Lewis hit an RBI single in the bottom of the seventh to trim the Cowgirls lead to three, but the Cowgirls held on to a 6-3 victory in game two.

Despite only scoring three runs, the Cyclones had a hit from every spot in the lineup.

“It’s encouraging, even if we didn’t get a hit in the first at-bat we kept making adjustments and that’s beneficial for later on,” said senior first baseman Sally Woolpert.

Oklahoma State improves to 31-11 (9-2 Big 12), and Iowa State falls to 23-17 (1-7 Big 12).

Game three of the series is scheduled for 1 p.m. on Sunday at Cyclone Sports Complex.
