WOMEN’S BASKETBALL: Lacey, Bolte shine in win over rival Iowa
December 10, 2009
No matter how long the ISU women’s basketball team continues to rely on the three-point shot, it will never get old to the fans at Hilton Coliseum.
Roars continuously drowned the arena while the 12,244 on hand witnessed the Cyclones knock down eight treys in a 10-minute stretch that spanned both sides of halftime, as they pulled away for a dominating 85–66 victory over Iowa.
Four of those eight threes came from the hot hand of Kelsey Bolte, who led the way for Iowa State with 26 total points on 8–13 shooting from beyond the arc.
“We were pushing it really well in transition,” Bolte said. “I was surprised how much I was open, and Alison (Lacey) was doing a good job getting to the ball to me and keeping me open. We were all fired up after each shot and it got us all excited.”
Her 26 points were a career high, as were her eight three-point field goals. It was the fourth time this season that she has scored in double-digits.
“You only get to play in this game four times, and you only get to do it twice in the greatest atmosphere in the country,” said coach Bill Fennelly. “And this was the last time Kelsey Bolte was going to play Iowa at Hilton and she definitely understood that.”
Iowa State dropped ten three-pointers in the first half in their second straight game, and its 16 total three-pointers were just one shy of the 17 they hit against Arkansas-Pine Bluff on Sunday.
“That’s the way we play,” Fennelly said. “We utilize the three point shot, and certainly right now we’re making a lot more than normal. We’re trying to be entertaining, and we owe it to the fans that come out to watch our game on a night like this.”
Aside from the three-point barrage, senior Alison Lacey produced one of the most historic performances ever at Iowa State as she recorded the school’s second ever triple-double, and the first since 1986.
The leadership provided by Lacey and Bolte propelled the Cyclones while half of the team was playing their first ever Cy-Hawk Series game at Hilton Coliseum. The duo combined to set five personal bests in earning the Cyclones two additional points in the Cy-Hawk competition.
“We’re playing a lot of new kids,” Fennelly said. “So it’s up to those two to play at a very high level everyday. They get all of the attention; they’re the focus of our team. They know the responsibility that comes with that at they want that responsibility. And tonight was a great example of that.”
The Cyclones will play their only road game in the month of December on Sunday, as they travel to Minneapolis for a 3:30 tip off in a nonconference matchup of two power conference teams.
This will mark the 5th straight year in which Minnesota and Iowa State have met in women’s basketball, with the home team winning each of the previous four games.
