WRESTLING: Iowa State sweeps Northern Iowa
December 19, 2009
After falling to one in-state rival in the last dual meet, the ISU wrestling team bounced back with a sweep of another.
A Dalton Jensen (141) pin and technical falls by Jon Reader (165), Andrew Long (125) and Nick Fanthorpe (133) notched a 42-0 Cyclone victory and the first sweep of Northern Iowa since 1966 on Saturday at the West Gym in Cedar Falls.
“To get everyone back winning tonight is important to us,” said coach Kevin Jackson. “It seems like it’s been months instead of two weeks between matches, so it was important for us to come out and show that we’re still on top of our game.”
Jackson’s coaching points of scoring in the first period and capitalizing on scoring opportunities were much more apparent in the meet than they were against Iowa on Dec. 6.
“As far as our philosophy and our approach to wrestling, I thought it was a lot closer to what I want to see consistently. We’ve gotten a little better.”
Jensen was filling in for regular 141 starter Nick Gallick, who sat out the meet because of health concerns. Jensen’s pin came just 1 minute 17 seconds into his match up and sealed the sweep for Iowa State.
“You can’t ask for anything better,” Jackson said. “It was a big win for him and for our team.”
While Jensen’s performance brought the mostly Cyclone-filled crowd to their feet, Jackson wasn’t exactly surprised that it ended with a pin.
“He’s a pinner; he’ll get on top of you and turn you and look to pin you,” Jackson said. “When a guy gets a pin, you can say he wrestled the best, and to wrestle the best as a fill-in is exciting for us.”
Junior Jon Reader dominated David Bonin, scoring a technical fall with a total of 19-4. Reader controlled the tempo from beginning to end and racked up four near falls in the process.
Senior Duke Burk (174) edged out Jarion Beets by 7-5 in what was arguably the closest match up of the night. Burk tied it up with an escape to start the third period and took the lead with a late technical violation on Beets. A bonus point from riding time would give Burk the two point victory.
Sophomore Jerome Ward (184) won his second-straight matchup by defeating Andy O’Loughlin, 8-2.
Heavyweight David Zabriskie struggled early with 285-pound Christian Brantley but won by decision in overtime, with a score of 6 to 1.
The next stop for the Cyclones is the prestigious Midlands Championships in Evanston, Ill., on Dec. 29-30. The tournament will provide the Cyclones with a chance to see even tighter competition than what they have seen so far this season.
“The Midlands is another chance to see Iowa, see some other teams in the country, and to see where we’re at and, hopefully, perform at the level we performed at tonight.”
Gallick’s status for the Midlands is still up in the air and will depend on how he heals in the meantime.
“We’re going to err on the side of caution with Nick,” Jackson said. “We’re not going to jeopardize his health for one event. We threw him out there against Iowa and found out exactly where we were at, from a health standpoint, and he’s not close to being healthy yet.”
