Presidential address on final agenda

Paige Godden –

Jon Turk, president of the Government of the Student Body and senior in political science, will address the Senate and the ISU student body at Wednesday’s GSB meeting.

The address is required at least once a semester, according to bylaws.

Turk said the speech is a way to reach out to the student body on what he has accomplished, and it will also serve as an opportunity to talk about the agenda for the remainder of the year.

A main focus of next semester will be GSB elections, Turk said.

The speech will focus on a variety of topics, including the university budget and tuition, Turk said.

Turk has, in the past, been against the proposed $100 surcharge, which will be discussed at the next Board of Regents meeting held Dec. 10.

Financial literacy will be another subject of the address. This semester the Senate added a new committee, the Student Debt Committee, to help better understand ISU students’ debt woes.

Turk has also launched a task force for financial literacy, designed to educate students on how to be fiscally responsible. In turn, students will be able to go out and teach other students the same things.

Turk said he will give an overview of where GSB will be going and what steps students can take to address major issues they will face in the future.

The meeting will be the last of this semester for the GSB.

Speaker Mike Weber, senior in family finance, housing and policy, wrote a bill to ratify a debt contract with AIDS Walk. The contract is for $238.92, which will be paid back to GSB within two semesters.

Weber also wrote a bill to ratify a debt contract with the Asian Pacific America Coalition. The contract is for $2,559.10 and would be paid back by the spring semester.

If debt contracts are not paid back within the set time and GSB does not find sufficient cause for nonpayment, GSB will start reclaiming money it previously allocated.

The entire executive cabinet will be in attendance at the meeting, but it might be low on senators; several, including Chandra Peterson, GSB vice president and junior in political science, will be helping out with Winterfest. The GSB allocated $2,046 to it in November.
