HOCKEY: Cyclones top Hawkeyes, 12–2
December 12, 2009
The Iowa State-Iowa rivalry was in full force in Friday night’s hockey game. Iowa State came away with a 12–2 blowout in the end, but it was an exciting trip to get there.
The Hawkeyes were first to score in the game with a goal nine minutes into the first period, but Iowa State responded with two quick goals by David Kurbatsky and Derek Behrman to give them the lead. Kurbatsky added another goal to give the Cyclones a 3–1 lead at the end of the period.
The game opened up in the second period as both the defense and offense came together and propelled the Cyclones to five scores in the period. Iowa State only allowed two shots on goal by the Hawkeyes in the second and the score came to 8–1 to close the period.
Iowa scored a quick goal to start out the third. The goal would turn out to be meaningless as the Cyclones added four more goals to pick up the win.
A total of five players were ejected from the game, including Iowa State’s Pete Majkozak and four Hawkeyes.
Brian Spring and Kurbatsky led the Cyclones, each recording a hat trick.
Paul Karus started the game in goal for the Cyclones and stopped 10 out of 12 Iowa shots.
The two teams will be back in action again on Saturday night at 7:30 in Ames.
