Ryan Doll is seeking re-election after being elected to the City Council in 2005. He graduated from Iowa State in 2007 with a degree in political science.

Doll said he was proud of the Student Affairs Commission the council created during his term. He also mentioned he was pleased with the Human Services Asset funding increase and noted that Ames City Council has boosted the funding by $200,000 over the last four years.

Jeremy Davis

Jeremy Davis graduated from Iowa State in 2001 with an undergraduate degree in agricultural education. In 2004, Davis received two master’s degrees from Iowa State, one in agricultural education and another in educational leadership and policy studies. Davis is employed by the Iowa College Student Aid Commission in Des Moines where he works with the Federal Legislative Affairs Compliance. He is working on his doctorate in educational leadership and administration through the University Of Nebraska.

Mike Murray

With a laid-back attitude and two YouTube videos, Mike Murray, mechanical engineer for Facilities Planning and Management, is in the running for the Ward 3 council position in Tuesday’s election.

Murray graduated from Iowa State in 1989 with a bachelor’s in mechanical engineering. He now resides in Ames with his wife and three children.

Serving on the Ames School District Board of Directors for three years has helped Murray understand how the public reacts to controversial issues.

Brian McLain

Brian McLain is running for the Ward 3 position in the Ames City Council. McLain is a senior in history at Iowa State and the father of twin boys. McLain ran unsuccessfully for the Iowa House of Representatives in 2006 as an independent. McLain said he loves Ames because it is a self-sustaining town where he’d love to see his kids grow up.

Dan Rice

Dan Rice, City Council incumbent, is running for his second term as the Ward 1 representative.

As a longtime resident of Ames, Rice said he hopes he will be able to continue to unite the Ames community with the university.

Tom Wacha

Tom Wacha is running for the Ward 1 seat on the Ames City Council. Wacha is a software engineer and former Navy cadet. He met his wife, Teresa, while they were both students at Iowa State. Wacha spent 5.5 years traveling for the Navy with his wife. The couple returned to Ames to raise their two boys. Wacha is very active in the Ames community.

Rice received his undergraduate education at Iowa State and his Master of Science in education degree from Indiana University. As an undergraduate student, Rice was involved with student activities including the Government of the Student Body and Student Union Board.

Sheli Dougherty

Sheli Dougherty is running for the at-large seat on the Ames City Council. She said she is running for City Council because she “is tired of being pissed off.” She works for Iowa State as a facilities mechanic. Dougherty describes herself as “a blue-collar, animal–loving tree–hugger.” Dougherty graduated from Iowa State in 2007 and has three minors and a B.A.

Mike Miller

Mike Miller is running for the at-large seat on the Ames City Council. He is an ISU graduate who owns the Gallery 319 framing shop and art gallery on Main Street. He has produced and directed plays for the Ames Community Theater. He and his wife have raised foster children in the past and now concentrate on their business.

Peter Orazem

Peter Orazem is running for the at-large seat for the Ames City Council. He is a university professor of economics at Iowa State and received his Ph.D. from Yale. He has served as the associate dean for the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. Orazem has done economic research on the Ames community as a labor economist.

Ann Campbell

Current mayor Ann Campbell will be running unopposed for her second term on the Ames City Council.

Campbell has lived in Ames since 1967 after attending Grinnell College for her undergraduate degree and receiving her graduate degree from Brown University. She has taught at DMACC and in Thailand and Boston.
