VOLLEYBALL: Six Cyclones honored by Big 12 Conference
November 30, 2009
The 2009 All-Big 12 volleyball awards were filled with names of ISU players Monday, including the Big 12 Coach of the Year, Christy Johnson-Lynch.
Also honored was junior defensive specialist Ashley Mass, who received Big 12 Libero of the Year for the second consecutive year.
Senior setter Kaylee Manns, junior outside hitter Victoria Henson and Mass were selected to the All-Big 12 First Team, while sophomore outside hitter Rachel Hockaday received Honorable Mention and middle blocker Jamie Straube was picked for the All-Freshman team.
After a 25–4 regular season record, the best in ISU history, and a second-place finish in the conference, the title of Big 12 Coach of the Year was more than deserved.
Twenty-five overall wins, along with 17 conference victories, were both school records.
The Cyclones beat both Nebraska and Texas this season, a feat that hadn’t been accomplished in the same season for six years.
Johnson-Lynch’s efforts in her fifth year as head coach earned the Cyclones the ability to host the first and second rounds of the NCAA tournament and a current No. 5 ranking in the American Volleyball Coaches Association poll.
Along with receiving the award for the second year in a row, Mass also posted the most digs in the conference yet again. The Muskego, Wis., native averaged 5.63 digs per contest for Iowa State, tallying 377 total digs in Big 12 play.
Henson was honored as a first team selection as a result of her all-around improvements throughout the season.
The 5-foot-10-inch outside hitter has become a solid defensive player for Iowa State this season, along with leading the Cyclones in kills in many contests throughout the year.
Henson posted a .229 attacking percentage in Big 12 play throughout the season and compiled 47 total blocks.
Along with her effort this year, Manns has been a key player in the development of the Cyclone volleyball program in her four years as a starter.
The Topeka, Kan., native has transformed into one of the nation’s top setters, and her skills were shown this season.
Manns is just four kills away from compiling 5,500 assists, 1,000 digs, 300 kills and 300 blocks in her career. She would become the first player in the league ever to do so.
Her ability to win jousts in competition has been an enormous threat for the Cyclones, as she rarely loses a battle at the net despite her height of just 5 feet 10 inches.
The senior setter was the only player in the conference to also receive the honor of Defensive Player of the Week throughout the 2009 season.
Straube, a unanimous selection to the All-Freshman team, continued to improve for Iowa State after receiving a consistent starting spot several games into the season.
Her blocking efforts fueled numerous Cyclone victories, averaging 1.21 blocks per set during conference competition.
The Tecumseh, Neb., native averaged 2.18 kills per set in conference play and was named Big 12 Rookie of the Week once during the season.
