Meeting will discuss chapel religious symbols

Paige Godden —

The University Affairs Committee will meet at 8 p.m. Tuesday in the Cardinal Room of the Memorial Union to discuss the issue of having religious symbols in the Memorial Union Chapel.

Students are encouraged to attend the meeting so they may share their opinions on the symbols.

At last Wednesday’s Government of the Student Body meeting, one of the two bills concerning the chapel was tabled for two weeks and will be brought back for discussion Nov. 12.

The other bill was referred to the University Affairs Committee for discussion.

The decision to wait on the bills was supported by Chandra Peterson, GSB vice president and junior in political science, when she gave up her chair temporarily at last week’s meeting to speak.

“We are a representative body,” Peterson said. “The University Affairs Committee has been doing a fabulous job; however, we have students that we know want to talk to us and yet we are wondering if we should hear from them.”

The first bill, written by Jacob Wilson, off-campus senator and sophomore in political science, was already amended by the University Affairs Committee and now reads “that the Government of the Student Body does not endorse the removal of all religious symbols in the Memorial Union Chapel, and be it further that all students be welcomed to add their own religious items into the Memorial Union Chapel in a respectful and conscientious manner.”

The second bill, also written by Wilson, states that “the Government of the Student Body shows its support for a religiously neutral reflection space in the Memorial Union that welcomes and celebrates all faiths and belief systems while respecting the great diversity on our campus and encouraging whoever wishes to use the space to do so proudly.”
