VOLLEYBALL: Cyclones round up regular season with sweep over Oklahoma
November 28, 2009
On the volleyball team’s senior night, the most winning class in school history proved why its distinction.
Setter Kaylee Manns recorded a double-double, and middle blocker Diane Kieger had the game-winning kill to propel the No. 7 Cyclones to a sweep (25-19, 25-20, 25-17) of Oklahoma on Saturday night at Hilton Coliseum.
“They’re the kind of ideal players you like to coach and have on your program,” coach Christy Johnson-Lynch said. “Both of them came before we were any good, and it says a lot about them to be willing to take the leap with us.”
Iowa State (25-4, 17-3 Big 12) wrapped up the regular season with a second-place finish in the Big 12, the highest in school history, with the win over the Sooners (18-11, 11-9). As Oklahoma is the second-best digging team in the conference, the Cyclones were expecting a defensive match.
“We know they’re a lot like us,” Manns said. “Since we play against each other every day in practice, we felt like we were pretty prepared for them.”
The first set showed the scrappy nature of both teams, and neither got into a rhythm until a late 5-0 run by the Cyclones ended the set. Iowa State hit .167 in the set, and Oklahoma hit -.03. The teams had a combined four service errors. The Sooners won the battle at the net, out-blocking the Cyclones 3-1 in the set.
“It’s hard to get into a rhythm when you’re not digging the ball up to the setter,” Johnson-Lynch said. “We started to get into a rhythm when we started to play good defense.”
The second set was a much different story, as the Cyclone offense hit its stride. Iowa State nearly doubled its kill total, as sophomore outside hitter Rachel Hockaday and junior outside hitter Victoria Henson each recorded four kills. Oklahoma began to show signs of frustration, allowing the Cyclones to rip a 7-0 run to put them in the driver’s seat for the rest of the set.
“Our game plan was to stay low air, keep hitting at them, and just let them make the errors,” Hockaday said.
The offensive rhythm continued into the third set, but Oklahoma was able to grab their first lead since the first set at the 8-8 mark. A pair of runs put the Cyclones up 17-11 before they were able to finish the match on Kieger’s only swing of the night.
“When we played them the first time, I thought we got rattled by the fact they would keep digging us,” Johnson-Lynch said. “I thought we did a better job this time, staying composed and not assuming that it might take four or five swings to get the ball down.”
The team wasn’t pleased with its effort early on, with the NCAA Tournament coming up. However, their ability to bounce back was a positive they took away from the match.
“We just weren’t playing crisp ball at all,” Hockaday said. “We were making some sloppy plays at the beginning, but in the second game we started getting back to our normal selves.”
Henson led the Cyclones with 12 kills. Hockaday finished with 11, and sophomore outside hitter Kelsey Peterson recorded eight. Manns had match-highs, with 36 assists and 17 digs, and junior libero Ashley Mass recorded 12 digs.
Suzy Boulavsky led the Sooners with 10 kills, and Bridget Laplante chipped in with nine. Brianna Barker, Caitlin Higgins and Maria Fernanda were all in double-digits in digs with 11, 16 and 10, respectively.
The Cyclones will find out what lies for them in the postseason during the NCAA tournament selection show, starting at 2 p.m. Sunday, on ESPN News.
