Record-breaking performances highlighted a sixth place finish in the final tournament of the fall season for the ISU women on Tuesday, Nov. 3.

After the first round of play at the Challenge at Onion Creek, the 45th ranked Cyclones found themselves in 17th place: nearing the bottom of the 21-team field.

The women rebounded, however, and proved their resilience in the second round, firing a four under par 276, shattering the school record of 289.

In addition to the 18-hole team scoring record, the women also set a school record for their 54-hole total of 867 – 16 strokes better than the previous mark.

Individually three Cyclones eclipsed the old 18-hole school record of 69 in the second round. Freshman Punpaka Phuntumabamrung now holds the individual scoring record at 67. Laurence Herman and Pennapa Pulsawath also etched their names into the record books by firing 68s.

Herman also took her place atop the record books in another category. Her eighth-place three-day total of 212 narrowly eclipsed Christi Athas’ previous 54-hole school record of 213.

Pulsawath, ranked 48th nationally according to Golfstat, finished the tournament with a 215, good for an 18th place tie. The senior from Bangkok, Thailand, has not placed outside the top 18 in any tournament this season.

The ISU women will resume play when the spring season tees-off at the Lady Puerto Rico Classic, Feb. 7-9. Despite the three-month break, the Cyclones will have their sights set on an NCAA Regional berth – a realistic goal as the women have yet to place outside the top eight in any tournament this season.
