HOCKEY: Illinois series ends in stalemate

The Cyclone hockey team finished 1-1 against CSCHL [Central States Collegiate Hockey League] opponent No. 2 Illinois at the Ames/ISU Ice Arena this weekend. The Fighting Illini were victorious Friday night after they were able to hold onto the lead in the final period to win 3-2.
Jason Pacheco got the Cyclones (9-5) on the board first with a goal deep into the first period, giving the Cyclones a 1-0 lead to the second period. In the second, Illinois scored three times, twice off a power play. At the end of the second period, Illinois led 3-1. Iowa State came out in the third period scoring within the first 20 seconds to give the Cyclones new life.
Illinois would tighten its defense to close out the game with a 3-2 win. ISU goalie Paul Karus saved 16 out of 19 shots throughout the three periods.
After their first loss, the Cyclones entered for revenge Saturday, pulling a 4-1 upset over Illinois.
Brody Toigo led off the scoring spree for Iowa State four seconds away from the end of the first period. In the second period, the Cyclones scored two quick goals via Cody Steele and Pete Majkozak to push the lead to 3-0. In the third, Iowa State’s Cort Bulloch scored a goal five minutes into the period. Illinois finally found the back of the net with eight minutes left to play in the game, but the Cyclones held on for the victory.
Cyclone goalie Eric Hudson was a wall at the net, stopping 26 of 27 shots by the Illini.
