VOLLEYBALL: Big 12 power rankings
November 10, 2009
1. No. 2 Texas (14-1)
After losing their first match of the season against Iowa State, the Longhorns rebounded with a dominating sweep of Missouri on Saturday, — proving the Longhorns are still the team to beat in the Big 12. It does not look like the Longhorns will have much trouble this week as they play games against Texas Tech and Kansas State.
2. No. 8 Iowa State (12-3)
Last week’s upset of Texas gave Iowa State a fighting chance at winning the Big 12. However, the loss Saturday to Nebraska all but clinched the Big 12 for the Longhorns. The Cyclones have a difficult road game Wednesday against Texas A&M, but will finish out the rest of season with winnable games against Kansas State, Kansas, Missouri and Oklahoma.
3. No. 9 Nebraska (11-4)
The Huskers had a very impressive sweep of Iowa State in Ames on Saturday, and proved they would not be rattled by the 10,203 fans in Hilton Coliseum. The Huskers hit .327 and held the Cyclones’ junior outside hitter Victoria Henson to only seven kills. Nebraska still has matches against Baylor and Texas A&M before the end of the season, so it will not be easy for them to gain ground on Iowa State.
4. Oklahoma (10-5)
Don’t look now, but the Sooners have won six of their last seven to find themselves one game out of third place. However, games against Texas and Iowa State won’t help their chances at gaining ground on the Huskers. Look for the Sooners to finish in fourth, as they do have games against Texas Tech and Missouri remaining.
5. No. 21 Baylor (9-6)
Since starting off the conference schedule winning six of the first seven games, Baylor has fallen into a pit of inconsistency. Last week they were swept by Oklahoma, but beat Texas A&M. This week should be pretty simple, with games against Colorado and Kansas. Games against Nebraska and Texas will be difficult for the Bears, as they make a push to crack the top 4 in the Big 12.
6. Texas A&M (7-7)
Texas A&M is a team with dual identities. One game they will have an impressive performance against a team like Kansas, the next they commit 36 attacking errors like in Saturday’s loss to Baylor. A stretch of games where they play Iowa State, Nebraska and Oklahoma does not make life any easier for the Aggies.
7. Kansas (5-9)
Kansas has won the games it should win, but has looked ugly against all others. Most recently, the Jayhawks were swept by Oklahoma and had three players finish the game with negative hitting percentages. Kansas State and Baylor challenge the Jayhawks will face this week. Kansas still has games against Iowa State, Texas and Nebraska left — providing for an ugly stretch of games to end an already ugly season.
8. Kansas State (4-10)
Kansas State has won two straight games, including an upset over Texas A&M last Wednesday. The Wildcats face in-state rival Kansas this week, and travel to hostile Hilton Coliseum to face the Cyclones. Remaining games include Texas and Nebraska, making it difficult to for the Wildcats to finish out the season on a high note.
9. Missouri (6-8)
At 6-8 in the Big 12, Missouri finds itself at No. 9 because of the embarrassing 25-8 second set loss to Texas. This week, Missouri plays Oklahoma and Colorado, with Colorado being the only game one would expect Missouri to win. After this week, the only game the Tigers should be able to win is a game against Texas Tech. After that, Iowa State, Baylor and Texas A&M remain.
10. Colorado (2-13)
Colorado has had a rough season. This week’s games against Baylor and Missouri will be tough for the Buffaloes. After that, Colorado has tough games against Texas A&M, Nebraska and Kansas State, with all but one of those games on the road.
11. Texas Tech (0-14)
It has been a long season for the Red Raiders. Unfortunately for them, they have games against Texas and Oklahoma this week, as well as a trip to College Station to face Texas A&M next week. It remains to be seen if Texas Tech can finally win a Big 12 game this season.
