LETTERS: Campus paths need revamp

To the ISU community,

As the weather has been closely reminiscent of Seattle lately — raining more than we would like — we, the Engineering Studies 265 class, have noticed the impacts that the rain and engineering on campus have had on our daily routine.

As a class that is studying the impacts of engineering, we couldn’t help but notice how much Facilities Planning and Management (FP&M) at Iowa State could improve our sidewalks.

We are writing to make you aware of how engineering could, and should, be improved on this campus.

The main problem we have noticed in regards to the sidewalks is drainage.

There are far too many areas on the sidewalks, especially those that are common walking areas, which turn into nothing but ponds when it rains.

Some of the most noticeable bodies of water are between Carver Hall and Music Hall, Parks Library, and Gerdin Business Building.

These aren’t only a nuisance, but they’re also potentially hazardous to us all because they’re slippery. We are also concerned with how these areas may be a difficulty to students and faculty with impaired mobility.

It is said that communication is the first step in solving an issue, and it is time we communicate in a manner other than normal everyday grumbling.

We understand and appreciate the hard work of FP&M employees, but by making FP&M, and possibly GSB, aware of our frustrations, it is our desire that something should be done.

Many students at Iowa State recognize the problem and are clearly dissatisfied with the current situation, and it is our suggestion that a discussion be started between students, faculty, GSB and FP&M. For now, we recommend that everybody keep a positive attitude, be cooperative and encourage anyone who recognizes any issue that could improve student life, to speak up and help make our campus better for years to come.
