SOCCER: Woelfel leads Cyclones past Blue Demons
September 3, 2009
Freshman midfielder Amanda Woelfel hadn’t scored a goal in Iowa State’s first three games of the season.
Try telling that to the No. 20 Blue Demons of DePaul.
Woelfel recorded two goals for the Cyclones (2-0-2) on Friday night, the first a go-ahead goal to give the Cyclones momentum in the 35th minute and the second a finalizing goal that secured Iowa State the 3-1 victory.
The Cyclones’ attack began on freshman goalkeeper Claire Hanold’s attempt to clear senior midfielder Casey Bothwell’s first attempt but ended up kicking right back to Bothwell’s feet where she buried it from nine yards out, putting the Cyclones up 1-0 just three minutes into the game.
“We did a good job putting some good pressure on and sometimes you get lucky and the chips fall your way I guess,” Bothwell said.
The Blue Demons’ first opportunity came in the 13th minute on a corner kick, but a DePaul attacker made contact with senior goalkeeper Ann Gleason before she touched the ball, resulting in a penalty.
DePaul got another chance on a corner in the 20th minute and scored after a header by senior defender Dominique Locasico, evening the score at 1-1.
Woelfel wouldn’t be denied, however, and answered with her first goal as a Cyclone putting her team up 2-1.
Woelfel knew she had a chance to score if the ball got through so she made the run and was determined to not let the ball go wide of the net.
“It was pretty amazing, I’ve been wanting to score forever now that I’m a forward and when I got it in I was just so excited,” Woelfel said.
The Cyclones and Blue Demons were even in shots on goal at 3-3 at the half, but the biggest disparity was in corner kicks in which DePaul led 8-4.
The team addressed the number of corner kicks given up and made adjustments at halftime.
“We worked on that for a half an hour yesterday defensively, so we weren’t real happy with giving up that many in the first half,” said head coach Wendy Dillinger. “We just reemphasized the fact that we can’t give up that many corner kicks and have to defend well.”
Also during halftime, Dillinger wrote the message “Believe” on the Cyclones’ white board to drive home the fact that they need to believe in the system and what they are doing.
Woelfel struck again three minutes into the second half, scoring her second goal of the game and putting the Cyclones up 3-1 with an assist from freshman defender Megan Long.
DePaul was coming off an upset of then- No. 12 Missouri, just in time for Woelfel and the Cyclones to pull an upset of their own, winning by a final score of 3-1.
“We sure have our spirits high right now,” Bothwell said. “It is great to get a ranked opponent before we start conference play because we have a lot of ranked teams in the conference. This is huge for our confidence right now.”
