LETTERS: Message risks greek reputation

No perfect frat guy? I think that at this point the ladies who are prowling fraternity row for a good man should perhaps just settle for a frat guy who responds properly to xenophobia. Take the picturesque fraternity on Lincoln Way, Pi Kappa Alpha. A quick search on Google brings up the page of the “Pikes,” and the Web site description says, “Pi Kappa Alpha is dedicated to developing men of integrity, intellect, and high moral character …”

Now this fraternity mission statement is all well and good until you take a look at the lawn display put up in that fraternity’s yard. On a piece of lumber, in full view of Lincoln Way, was the phrase, “Allah creates, we cremate,” written in Sharpie. I am sure that some people will point to vandalism as the cause of this culturally insensitive phrase, but it was written at least 16 feet off the ground, far out of reach of even the tallest bigot in Ames. I am also sure that others will point to the unwritten “understanding” that boys will be boys, or they may point out that a bad apple does not spoil the bunch.

But I know one thing rings true to me — it may take one “bad” frat brother to write something this openly racist, but the fraternity as a whole needs to take greater care to erase the hate when such a situation presents itself.

Maybe the next time ladies are prowling fraternity row for a good man they should take a good hard look at the way the men inside repond to hate.
