LETTERS: Fast action against ‘fan cans’ shows dedication to students
August 31, 2009
Youth & Shelter Services commends the Iowa State Daily Editorial Board for its responsible handling of the Anheuser-Busch “fan can” beer sales promotion. We are proud that ISU students took a strong stand against big alcohol’s push to target ISU students, most of whom are underage.
We would also like to recognize the swift action of ISU attorney Paul Tanaka and ISU officials in their objection to the school’s colors being used to sell cans of Bud Light. They join the University of Iowa and more than a dozen other universities that have objected to the “fan cans.”
We at Youth & Shelter Services are very aware of the destructive power of underage and binge drinking.
It is great to see both the ISU Editorial Board as well as ISU officials align with Youth & Shelter Services and the Story County Prevention Policy Board regarding the seriousness of “fan can” promotions.
The cans bearing ISU colors are Bud Light, the nation’s best-selling brand of beer. Iowa State, like many universities, is trying to address binge and underage drinking among students. “Fan cans” will only hinder these public health efforts.
Together, the Ames community and Iowa State can work to lower the impact of these advertising campaigns and improve the health of our students and ourselves.
