GSB to consider new position, funding lacrosse team

Paige Godden —

To increase communication between the Government of the Student Body and the Graduate and Professional Student Senate, GSB will vote Wednesday to implement a new position.

The vote will establish the a new position, the university relations and legislative affairs chair, which will serve as an intermediary between the two governing bodies.

If GSB approves the new position, Portia Allen, sophomore in veterinary medicine and member of GPSS, will be named the new chair.

“The senate bill will modify the articles of cooperation to add a voting chair to the URLA,” said Chandra Peterson, GSB vice president and junior in political science.

If the bill passes this will be a new position for GSB in addition to the three GPSS members currently serving on GSB.

“Allowing Portia to have a voice and to go back and forth between the GSB and the GPSS brings the groups closer,” said Aaron Gross, GPSS president and graduate student in entomology.

Allen said she is looking forward to bringing together the two governing bodies.

“Everything that the university affairs does and the GSB does is directly related the URLA in the GPSS,” Allen said. “The connection will bind the committees. The connection has never been made before.”

Bringing together the two committees will hopefully bring some cohesiveness to the groups, Allen added.

Wednesday’s meeting will also include legislation to grant the Lacrosse team $1,365.16 to relieve their debt.

“We are asking for a loan until we can get dues from people. We are planning on paying back the loan hopefully by the end of this semester,” said Bradley Schminkley, treasurer of the Lacrosse Club and sophomore in software engineering.

“We need the money because we can’t make payments for a tournament this weekend and some other upcoming tournaments.”
