SOCCER: Iowa State remains undefeated after weekend in Illinois
September 12, 2009
The Cyclones kept the undefeated season alive as they came away with a 2-1 victory over the Western Illinois Leathernecks to end their weekend.
Freshman midfielder Amanda Woelfel opened the scoring with a header 33 minutes in on a cross from senior midfielder Elise Reid, putting the Cyclones up 1-0. That gave Woelfel her third goal in four games.
Reid continued to make a difference in the second half as she put in the game-winning, shorthanded goal in the 86th minute, securing the Cyclones’ 2-1 victory. Reid recorded her first goal and assist of the season against the Leathernecks.
“Elise came into the game in the first half and made a difference,” head coach Wendy Dillinger said in a press release. “She did what we needed from her today.”
Iowa State was forced to play a player down after junior Jordan Bishop was given a red card in the 71st minute.
“It was good to get a win playing a player down,” Dillinger said. “When Jordan got sent off, we stepped up our energy and rallied around each other. We showed urgency to score and refused to lose.”
The Cyclones also kept their streak of never trailing in a game so far this season, and the defense only forced senior goalkeeper Ann Gleason to make one save.
This moves the Cyclones’ record to 4-0-3 on the season. Their sights are now set on the Hawkeyes at Iowa City and the Bulldogs at Drake next weekend.
