VOLLEYBALL: iowa State downs Iowa in first game of Hawkeye Challenge
September 11, 2009
In its first game of the Hawkeye Challenge in Iowa City, the Iowa State volleyball team pushed past in-state rival Iowa in a four-set victory Friday night. Led by sophomore Kelsey Petersen’s 14 kills, the Cyclones won 3-1 (25-18, 21-25, 25-19, 25-20) to improve to 6-1 on the 2009 season.
14 kills marked a career high for Petersen and junior Victoria Henson also posted 14 on the match.
Junior libero Ashley Mass was a necessary weapon for Iowa State in back court, as she picked up 20 digs in the contest for the second straight game.
On the Iowa side, it was Megan Schipper’s 17 kills that set the tone for the Hawkeye offense. Schipper, however, compiled a low .111 hitting percentage in the game and as a team Iowa had an attacking percentage of .145.
