GSB leaders work through summer to prepare for 2009-10 year

While Ames’ streets cleared and students enjoyed summer, the Government of the Student Body set to work on its ambitious agenda.

“One of our main accomplishments this summer was the reconstruction of our Web site,” GSB vice president and junior in political science Chandra Peterson, said. “We made it more student friendly and student oriented. A few pages are still under construction, but we added a whole new living green section.”

In addition, she said she and GSB President and senior in political science Jonathan Turk met with several university officials throughout the summer.

The GSB has several new goals to accomplish throughout this semester.

“Campustown could be so much more than what it is,” Peterson said. “We are looking forward to the Campustown Court dedication on Friday. It was a tri-fold effort and a step toward a better Campustown.”

GSB has also been working with groups on sustainability issues.

“We are trying to reduce our carbon footprint and spreading the live green message,” Peterson said. “This is a great opportunity to live green, and figure out what else we can do to help.”

Yet, GSB has some goals that are not yet in progress.

“We want to start an umbrella program to bring different associations together, have forums on campus and some random events,” she said.

Peterson has some goals on her own agenda, too.

“Personally, I want to work with students to increase awareness of the financial aid office and tax credit programs,” Peterson said. “I hope to raise awareness of GSB. Students should know that GSB is here to help them with anything,” Peterson said, “We may not be able to solve their problems ourselves, but we can tell them where to go.”

Peterson said she thinks GSB representatives “should be available at any time” if students have questions.
