Councilman Jim Popken announced Wednesday morning that he will not seek another term on the Ames City Council, according to a press release.

Popken, an at-large member of the council, began serving in 2006, and his term is set to expire at the end of 2009. Peter Orazem, university professor of economics, previously announced intent to run for Popken’s seat.

Popken wrote that he needs a “break from public service” and won’t seek re-election.

“When elected to the Ames City Council, I took that four-year commitment very seriously, and it has been a priority in my life,” he wrote. “As I expected, that commitment has required significant time, energy and emotional effort. Being a city councilperson is a rewarding and a demanding experience. Much of that required time and energy has been at the expense of my professional life.”
