Editorial: Good luck to the incoming StuGov president, vice president
April 10, 2019
For those in tune with campus politics, today marks a special occasion — the newly elected president and vice president will be inaugurated.
Austin Graber and Vishesh Bhatia were elected to president, vice president in March with 54 percent of the votes.
The Iowa State Student Government inauguration will be held at the Iowa State Alumni Center at 6 p.m. It will serve as an opportunity for the Graber and Bhatia to introduce themselves to administrators and other campus leaders.
Throughout their campaign process, Graber and Bhatia ran on a platform to elevate, educate and connect by focusing their efforts on student wellness, elevating Cyclone pride and building community.
Major platform points by Graber and Bhatia include conducting Fireside Chats and hosting Reverse Town Halls, creating a mental health section in Destination Iowa State and bringing in a lecture series that focuses on sexual assault and mental health awareness.
As with any candidate, the ISD Editorial Board hopes that their time in office is a success. Election season oftentimes brings in a slew of new ideas and initiatives to campus that otherwise would fall to the wayside or that the previous administration couldn’t dedicate energy to.
When Student Government does well, the students benefit. That being said, the ISD Editorial Board encourages Graber and Bhatia to welcome new ideas that weren’t previously discussed by their campaign. As they build a cabinet to focus on specific issues, as well as engage with the Senate, it is important to recognize that campaign promises can, and should, adapt.
However, as with any president and vice president, it is important to run a transparent administration. While it is difficult to ensure that every campaign promise sees fruition, we encourage Graber and Bhatia to share in their shortcomings and successes.
The Student Government president and vice president, once in office, are tasked with a multitude of responsibilities such as sitting on committees, representing students and being a present, active voice on campus.
The ISD Editorial Board recommends that Graber and Bhatia remain mindful of their daunting schedules and ensure that they fit in time to work on their platform points.
The role of Student Government president and vice president is daunting. It is oftentimes a thankless job that requires long days and long nights.
The ISD Editorial Board commends all students that take time out of their Iowa State experience to create a better campus for their classmates. We hope that Graber and Bhatia will be successful in their upcoming administration.
