Furman opening delayed again, won’t open until May 29, 2010

City of Ames officials announced Wednesday that the Furman Aquatic Center will not open until next May, according to a press release.
The facility is scheduled to open May 29, 2010 — Memorial Day weekend.
Concrete was pored on Aug. 3 and Aug. 13 and “did not meet the required specifications,” according to the release, and city staff has asked the contractor to remove this concrete.
“On behalf of the residents of Ames, staff has always been clear that quality could never be compromised,” Nancy Carroll, parks and recreation director, wrote in a press release. “The removal of this concrete is an important step in assuring that we provide quality pool decking for years to come.”
Staff will observe some concrete for the next 28 days while other concrete areas are pulled out immediately.
“While the recent events are disappointing, our number one priority continues to be completing a top-quality, long-lasting facility that our residents and future generations will enjoy,” Carroll wrote. “We appreciate the continued patience and support of the community.”
